Bangkok Beyond the Party: A guide for a 30-something Solo Traver.
Written by Omalicha
As a foodie with a soft spot for sunshine and the sea, I’ve been obsessed with Thai cuisine ever since my first plate of chicken pad Thai. But as a 30 something year old female, feeling well past my bar-hopping era, I wasn’t sure Thailand would be my scene. The country’s wild party rep had me hesitating. But after yet another freezing February in Canada, I was done waiting on flaky friends or overpriced group tours. So, I spontaneously booked my ticket to Thailand and looking back at how things worked out, traveling solo was a great decision.
As part of my 32-day solo adventures to 5 countries in Southeast Asia, I chose Bangkok for my first destination because the city is known to be tourist-friendly and diverse. As a dark-skinned Black woman, I’m mindful that I might be someone’s first encounter with a West African looking traveler, so, I felt more comfortable starting my trip in a city where locals are used to visitors from all part of the world.
Bangkok quickly became one of my favorite cities that I’ve ever visited. I felt safe, the MRT was cheap and easy to use, and the people were genuinely kind. And the food? Incredible. Street vendors are everywhere, day and night, serving up delicious, affordable local cuisines. I skipped the club scene and soaked up the energy at night markets instead enjoyed live music, tasty food, shopping, and a laid-back vibe. I found that traveling solo made locals and fellow travelers more open to starting conversations with me, so I never really felt alone. I got invited on dates, to hang out, or just chatted with people in light, friendly conversations.
So, if you’ve been dreaming about Thailand but hesitant to go alone, don’t be. There’s so much more to experience than bar crawls and party streets. Here’s a few things to add to your Bangkok itinerary:
Temple-Hopping (Day-Time Activity)
Wear modest clothing. Shoulders and knees should be covered Wat Arun was hands down the most unforgettable temple I visited in Bangkok. It’s become a personal reference point and a beautiful reminder that there’s so much magic in imperfection. Markets (Night-Time Activity)
Bangkok’s night markets are a lively blend of culture, food, and fun; perfect for foodies, bargain hunters, or anyone wanting to experience the city after dark. Jodd Fair and Chatuchak Weekend Market were my personal favorites for their mix of delicious street food and live entertainment. Both are easy to reach via MRT. Museums (Day-Time Activity)
Museums in Bangkok offer a dynamic window into Thailand’s rich cultural, artistic, and historical heritage. During my stay in Bangkok, I enjoyed visiting Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (BACC) because it was free and offered interactive exhibits and shops to purchase unique postcards that made perfect souvenirs. When visiting a museum, I always recommend renting a self-paced audio guide to get the most out of your visit. Explore Top Neighborhoods (Day or Night-Time Activity)
Exploring on foot is one of the best ways to connect with local life, uncover hidden gems, and fully immerse yourself in the culture. Based on my interest, I particularly enjoyed visiting Talat Noi neighborhood. I was fascinated by the street art, quirky installations and boutique cafes. It’s a visually appealing and colorful neighborhood and great for photos. It’s perfect for photos by day and rooftop views by night. Each area offers unique experiences, from vibrant nightlife to serene parks, ensuring a memorable visit.
Join a Day Tour
As much as I enjoy my own company, solo travel can sometimes feel a bit isolating. On days when I crave connection, I recharge by joining a day tour. Airbnb Experiences and TripAdvisor are great platforms for finding safe, fun, and reliable activities that fit your schedule and location. Some of the day tours I loved and would absolutely recommending Bangkok are:
Food tour : Hidden Bangkok Tuktuk Street Food
High Energy Tour: Muay Thai Fighter Experience
Shopping and sightseeing tours : Half-Day Railway Market and Floating Market Tour in Thailand
Temple Toure: Grand Palace & Temples of Bangkok with experienced guide
Before booking any tours, I strongly recommend doing a quick review check, it makes all the difference! You can also search for walking tours, bike tours, cooking classes.
