How I Traveled Across 5 Countries within Asia with Just a Travel Backpack

November 2025

As the hibernation months settle here in Canada, I can’t help but crave sunshine, culture, and 30-degree weather on some tropical island. Having something exciting to look forward to always gets me through the winter blues.

For my next escape, I’m applying the same strategy that saved me hundreds during my recent solo trip across Asia where I visited 5 countries and 13 cities with everything packed into one 40 liter travel pack. Not once did I worry about lost luggage or airport delays. Everything I needed was always within reach.

How I visited 5 countries and 13 cities across Asia

My Smart Packing Strategy

1. Airline Rules
Before my trip, I researched carry-on limits and discovered that most airlines allow up to 40 liter packs. I chose the Osprey Fairview 40, and it truly delivered via its durability, functionality, and smart compartmental design.

2. Logistics & Planning
A wise friend once said, “Spontaneity is fun, but it can be costly.” Knowing this to be true, I pre-booked most of my accommodation and transport to lock in good deals, but I still left room for impromptu adventures. I also prioritized accommodations that came with laundry amenity or located close to a laundry mart.

3. Climate Research
Weather played a huge role in what I packed. While Tokyo, Osaka, and Hanoi were chilly, other stops reached 30°C. Researching ahead helped me plan versatile outfits and choose travel-friendly skincare that worked across climates.

4. Culture & Customs
Visiting temples and sacred sites like Cambodia’s Toul Sleng Genocide Museum or Japan’s Hiroshima Peace Memorial meant dressing modestly. I opted for long skirts and dresses with slits; respectful yet still feminine and stylish.

How I Packed

  • I used IKEA packing cubes for structure and space efficiency.

  • I was very intentional to choose mix-and-match pieces i.e. 2 skirts, 2 tops, 2 dresses, 1 short, 2 sweaters, 1 jean, 1 comfy tight, 2 bathing suits, 7 days worth of underwear.

  • Since I was going to be walking a lot I did extensive research for top rated shoes that were also stylish enough to pair with pants and dresses. I packed the ASICS Women’s GEL-1130 sneakers (White/Birch) which were super comfortable, easy to clean, and perfect for both warm and cool climates.

Same shoes different looks, different cities.

Extra Tips

  • Train your body: Lots of walking and a moderately heavy backpack. Do some squats and lifts before your trip!

  • Simplify your beauty routine: Keep hair and skincare minimal and practical for on-the-go days.

  • Learn local greetings: Saying “hello,” “please,” and “thank you” in the local language instantly earns smiles and connection points.

Traveling light gave me freedom, flexibility, and peace of mind. Not once did I stress over lost luggage or heavy suitcases. I could easily hop from one city to another without feeling weighed down.

What about you? Could you take on multiple countries with just a 40L backpack, or are you team checked luggage? Let me know in the comments!
