3 Must-Have Apps for Solo Travel in Southeast Asia

Written by Omalicha

Unless you speak the local language or have a photographic memory, these apps are non-negotiable for smooth solo travel in Southeast Asia:

1. eSIM App
Sure, local SIMs might be cheaper, but it’s 2025—who’s still fiddling with plastic chips? eSIMs are way more convenient, especially when you're hopping between countries. I’ve used Airalo across the Americas and on my recent Southeast Asia trip, and it’s been a game changer. You can buy data by country or get a regional plan that keeps you connected everywhere. Do your research and pick the best one for your route.

2. Google Translate
At the very least, learn how to say “hello” and “thank you” in the local language. For everything else, Google Translate has your back.

3. Google Maps
Not perfect, but pretty damn close. The live view arrows are chef’s kiss. Google Maps helped me walk my way through hidden gems in Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Singapore, and Japan.

Bonus Apps

Bolt: A ride-hailing app I found cheaper than Grab in Thailand. Works with cash or card.

Grab: Popular across Asia, but card-only. Reliable and everywhere.

What other travel apps do you swear by?
